
A wave of violence has once again struck Benue State, as suspected armed herders launched a deadly raid on the Ukum Local Government Area. The attack, which occurred in the Tse Ugema Chul, Mbakesa, Ugbaam community, situated near Zaki Biam, resulted in the tragic loss of six lives, with numerous individuals still unaccounted for
The incident unfolded on Saturday, igniting fear and distress among the residents of the affected area in Benue State. Local sources reveal that the violence stemmed from a confrontation between local youths and cattle that had strayed into their farmlands, causing significant damage to their yam crops.
In an attempt to protect their livelihoods, the youths mobilized to drive the cattle away. However, their efforts were met with deadly force. Gunmen, who had strategically positioned themselves in an ambush, opened fire on the youths, resulting in the immediate deaths of several individuals.

As of Saturday evening, six bodies had been recovered from the scene, leaving the community in a state of mourning. The search for other missing persons continues, heightening the anxiety and uncertainty among residents.
Despite the severity of the situation, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue Command, CSP Catherine Anene, stated that she had not yet received an official report from Ukum regarding the attack.
However, the Chairman of Ukum Local Government, Mr. Jonathan Modi, confirmed the occurrence of the attack. Initially, Modi indicated that he was en route to the affected community to assess the situation firsthand.
Subsequently, Modi expressed his profound distress and emotional turmoil, stating that he was not in a suitable frame of mind to provide an interview. He described himself as being “in pain” over the events that had transpired.
Modi explained that he was currently in Zaki Biam, grappling with the aftermath of the attack. He emphasized his emotional state, indicating that he would only be able to discuss the matter in person with the governor. He asked for understanding during his time of grief.
