The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially addressed the circulating rumors regarding the alleged return of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
In a statement released on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, firmly declared that SARS remains permanently disbanded. This clarification comes in response to widespread speculation and misinformation suggesting the unit’s reinstatement.
The FPRO’s statement, titled “DISCLAIMER: SARS REMAINS DISSOLVED – FPRO,” explicitly refutes these claims. Adejobi emphasized that SARS was officially dissolved on October 11, 2020, following the nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality. He reiterated that this decision stands, and the unit has not been resurrected in any form or under any pretense.
The police spokesperson urged Nigerians to be discerning consumers of information, particularly regarding security matters. He advised the public to verify the authenticity of reports before sharing them, emphasizing the potential for misinformation to cause unnecessary panic and confusion. Adejobi stressed the importance of relying on established and credible sources for accurate updates.
To ensure access to factual information, Adejobi directed citizens to the official Nigeria Police Force social media channels. He provided the handles for X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, encouraging the public to follow these platforms for verified news and announcements. This initiative aims to promote transparency and combat the spread of false narratives.
The NPF’s statement underscores its commitment to public safety and awareness. By proactively addressing the rumors surrounding SARS, the Force aims to maintain public trust and prevent the resurgence of anxieties related to police brutality. The emphasis on verifying information highlights the importance of responsible information sharing in fostering a well-informed and secure society.
