Former President Goodluck Jonathan has provided insight into his administration’s decision not to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference

Jonathan Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, in Lagos, Jonathan cited the turbulent political climate at the time as the primary reason for the inaction.
Jonathan emphasized that the 2014 National Conference, a significant undertaking, would not have materialized without the contributions of figures like the late Adebanjo. He acknowledged the persistent inquiries regarding the non-implementation of the conference’s recommendations, attributing it to the intense political instability that prevailed during that period.
He explained that a key legislative figure within his own party had actively mobilized against him, eventually defecting to another party. Jonathan further revealed that certain individuals were determined to undermine his administration, making it an inopportune moment to present such a comprehensive document.

Despite the challenges, Jonathan expressed optimism that a future government would review and implement the conference’s recommendations, which he believed were formulated by credible Nigerians without political bias and remain relevant to the nation’s progress.
During the condolence visit, Jonathan, accompanied by notable figures including former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma and Chief Olabode George, described Adebanjo as a national leader, not merely an Afenifere leader. He praised Adebanjo’s wisdom, courage, and commitment to truth and justice.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who also paid a condolence visit, echoed Jonathan’s sentiments, describing Adebanjo as a great leader whose death was a significant loss. Abubakar highlighted Adebanjo’s contributions to national unity and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing the virtues he had learned from the late elder statesman
Following the condolence visits, Atiku, Jonathan, and other prominent figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, attended a dinner hosted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Lagos, further underscoring the collective respect and admiration for the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo.
