
General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), former Head of State, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, for the restoration of his rank and honor. Gowon acknowledged Babangida’s pivotal role in averting treason charges against him.
Speaking at a book presentation hosted by the former military president in Abuja on Thursday, Gowon emphasized the depth of their enduring friendship. He also recognized Babangida’s significant contributions to the development of Nigeria.
Gowon recounted his challenging period in government, revealing that he was once charged with treason. He explained that President Shehu Shagari later rescinded the order. However, it was Babangida who ultimately reinstated his rank and honor, an act for which Gowon remains deeply grateful. He further acknowledged the numerous ways in which Babangida had served the nation.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also commended Babangida for his initiative in documenting his experiences in a book. Jonathan emphasized the importance of such projects in enriching Nigeria’s historical records.
Jonathan stated that contributing to the documentation of history strengthens it and enhances its relevance. He expressed his belief that Babangida’s book would be a valuable addition to the nation’s historical narrative.

Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, joined in paying tribute to Babangida. He fondly described him as both a friend and a brother, highlighting the longevity of their relationship.

Abubakar shared that their bond spans over 80 years. He expressed his gratitude to Babangida for their enduring friendship and brotherhood. He also mentioned their shared moments of reminiscing about past experiences, which always bring joy to their hearts. Abubakar hoped that such moments of happiness would continue to grace their later years.
The book presentation event was graced by the presence of numerous dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu. Also in attendance were former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, and former Heads of State Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other notable figures were also present at the occasion.
