Delta Students Propel Nigeria to World Debate Championship Victory in Qatar

Students from Delta State, proudly representing Nigeria, have achieved a remarkable feat by becoming world champions at the prestigious World School Debate Championship held in Doha, Qatar. Their triumph saw them overcome some of the globe’s most talented young debaters, bringing immense pride to their nation.

The Delta team earned the honor of representing Nigeria on the global stage after clinching the national championship, an event organized by the Presidential Schools Debate Nigeria under the aegis of the Presidency. This national victory paved their way to international competition.

Brilliant minds from various Delta State schools, the victorious Nigerian team included Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Honour (Okpaka Secondary School, Okpaka), Ekhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale).

Their path to victory was marked by impressive performances. They secured a hard-fought 2-1 win in the first round, followed by a decisive 3-0 clean sweep in the final round. This combined 5-1 aggregate score crowned them overall champions of the tournament, after successfully advancing through rounds against formidable teams from the State of Chicago, USA, and Qatar.

Prior to their departure for Doha, the team had the privilege of visiting the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, at Government House, Asaba. Governor Oborevwori offered them words of encouragement and prayers, conveying his strong belief in their potential to bring honor to both the state and the nation.

Their global victory has been met with widespread celebration across Nigeria, especially within Delta State, where education continues to receive strategic backing under Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda. Education stakeholders and the general public have lauded the students’ achievement as a profound inspiration for young Nigerians, underscoring the critical importance of sustained investment in education, the development of critical thinking skills, and youth empowerment initiatives.
