The Department of State Services (DSS) has broken its silence regarding the recent security presence at the Lagos State House of Assembly. Contrary to speculation, the DSS clarified that its involvement was not a unilateral action but a response to a direct request from the Assembly itself. The agency stated that it acted on a formal letter received from the Assembly, dated February 14, 2025, requesting additional security measures due to perceived threats.
It stated, “The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly plans to resume office on the 18th of February, 2025, posing a potential security threat to the Assembly and its members. In light of this situation, we kindly request that you take necessary measures to fortify the security of the Assembly premises with effect from Sunday, 16th February, 2025, by increasing the presence of your men and observing strict access control within and outside the Assembly premises till further notice.
The Assembly’s letter, signed by Acting Clerk Mr. A.T.B. Ottun, specifically cited credible intelligence suggesting plans to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker on February 18, 2025. This information prompted the Assembly to seek the assistance of the DSS in maintaining order and ensuring the safety and security of its members.
In its statement, the DSS emphasized that its deployment of personnel was solely for the purpose of protecting Assembly members and preserving order within the legislative complex. The agency explicitly stated that its actions were based on the lawmakers’ request and were not influenced by any external factors or pressures. The DSS underscored its commitment to remaining impartial and objective in its security operations.
This clarification from the DSS comes amidst a period of heightened tension at the Lagos State House of Assembly. Recent days have seen clashes between legislative workers and security personnel, further highlighting the ongoing leadership tussle between the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. The DSS presence appears to be an attempt to de-escalate the situation and prevent further disruptions.
