south south region approves of tinubu and others
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria’s South-South geopolitical zone has unequivocally thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu and the four APC governors within the region, endorsing them as sole candidates for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This significant declaration of support was the key outcome of a high-level meeting of South-South APC stakeholders held on Saturday in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. This early endorsement by the zonal leadership, as contained in a communique read by the Zonal Chairman, Victor Gaidom, signifies a concerted effort to foster unity and present a formidable, unified front for the next electoral cycle.
Beyond the candidacies, the stakeholders at the meeting also passed a resounding vote of confidence in the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the members of the zonal working committee. This commendation recognized their steadfast commitment to the growth and continued success of the party. Additionally, the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, received praise for his “unalloyed support” for President Tinubu’s administration and his “spectacular performance” in Abuja, highlighting a broad appreciation for key figures within the ruling party.
Earlier in the meeting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who serves as the APC Leader in the South-South, delivered a compelling address titled “United Vision: Advancing South-South Progress Under President Bola Tinubu.” He asserted that under President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” administration, the South-South geopolitical zone is no longer an afterthought in national development. Akpabio passionately rallied the zone to fully embrace and support the President’s agenda, urging them to ensure his re-election in 2027. “Let us bury division and rally behind the APC, the only party with the structure, vision, and leadership to transform Nigeria,” he declared. He further implored party members to support President Tinubu not just verbally, but through active mobilization, community enlightenment, and a proactive defense of the nation’s future. Akpabio emphasized that the task ahead for 2027 is not merely political but “generational,” aimed at securing a better life, peace, and prosperity for the region’s communities.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio then highlighted tangible achievements under the “Renewed Hope Agenda” that directly impact the South-South. He specifically pointed to the landmark Coastal Highway Project, which spans from Lagos through various South-South states to Calabar. He described this project as not only a symbol of visionary leadership but also a significant economic game-changer, poised to open up economic corridors in the Niger Delta, boost inter-state commerce, facilitate tourism, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. This, he noted, is a “promise fulfilled and a legacy in motion.” He further added that President Tinubu’s administration has consistently continued the rehabilitation of the East-West Road, a critical artery for millions in the region, and is reviving the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway line, bringing renewed hope to previously abandoned communities. In the energy sector, efforts are underway to harness the full potential of the Gas Revolution Industrial Park in Delta State and to develop modular refineries, ensuring the Niger Delta directly benefits more from its vast resources. Bold reforms, such as the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), were also highlighted for guaranteeing greater host community participation and improved transparency in revenue allocation.
