Tekno, the Nigerian music star, recently opened up about his past struggles with financial exploitation in the music industry, despite his widespread fame. He shared his experiences during a candid reflection, stating, “Back then I was everywhere — but I had nothing in my bank account. I had popular songs and was still broke.”
The artist revealed how record labels facilitated his rise to stardom but simultaneously stifled his financial growth. “Record labels were making everything easier for me; they gave me fame, but secretly took their cut and left me with a small percentage of what was actually mine,” Tekno explained. He specifically lamented receiving only 25% of the earnings from his hit songs, a situation he believes he could now negotiate more favorably. “I just didn’t know how to do it back then,” he admitted.

Tekno contrasted his past with his current situation, asserting, “I’m richer now, but less famous.” He issued a warning to aspiring artists, cautioning that “in this industry, many record labels will make you famous and broke.” Despite these past challenges, Tekno concluded with a resolute declaration: “But I’m back now.”
